Custom Compounding for Podiatry
SBH Medical compounding pharmacists located near
Columbus, OH in Worthington, have the capabilities to customize
preparations to treat conditions of the foot and ankle that improve
therapeutic outcomes, reduce side effects, and save patients time
and money.
Compounding medications for conditions that podiatrists
treat allows for...
- ...unique delivery vehicles to be utilized
(i.e. topical cream, iontophoresis solution, nail lacquer);
which makes administering the medication easier, more pleasant,
and potentially more effective
- ...medicines to be concentrated based on individual
need, which maximizes therapeutic outcomes while reducing side
effects
- ...multiple medications, that have been shown
to have modest effects individually, to be combined to form
a more potent customized medication. This may speed the healing
process and save patients valuable time and money, eliminating
needlessly switching from one therapy to the next
ACHILLES TENDONITIS
The Achilles tendon connects the calf muscle to
the heel bone. It lets you rise up on your toes and push off when
you walk or run. Achilles tendon problems are most often caused
by overuse or repeated movements. These movements can happen during
sports, work, or other activities.
The Achilles tendon does not have good blood supply
or cell activity, so this injury can be slow to heal. The tendon
receives nutrients from the tendon sheath or paratendon. When
an injury occurs to the tendon, cells from surrounding structures
migrate into the tendon to assist in repair. Some of these cells
come from blood vessels that enter the tendon to provide direct
blood flow to increase healing.
The pharmacists at SBH Medical have the ability
to compound several transdermal/topical medications that may help
to alleviate achilles tendonitis pain.
These gels/creams/ointments would be easy to use,
may cause fewer systemic side effects than their oral counterparts,
and custom made to meet your individual needs. They might contain
a combination of the following medications:
- Glyceryl Trinitrate
- Piroxicam
NEUROPATHIC PAIN
Neuropathic pain is a complex, chronic pain state
that usually is accompanied by tissue injury. Neuropathic pain
results from damage to or dysfunction of the peripheral or central
nervous system, rather than stimulation of pain receptors.
SBH Medical has the ability to compound several
transdermal medications that may help to alleviate many forms
of neuropathic pain. These gels/creams would be easy to use, may
cause fewer systemic side effects than their oral counterparts,
and custom made to meet your individual needs. They might contain
a combination of the following medications:
- Amitriptyline
- Baclofen
- Carbamazepine
- Clonidine
- Gabapentin
- Ketamine
- Mexiletine
- Phenytoin
PLANTAR/COMMON WARTS
Warts are skin infections caused by viruses
of the human papillomavirus (HPV) family. They can be unsightly
and cause their suffers to feel quite self-conscious. There are
a variety of treatment strategies, most of which can be time consuming,
painful, expensive, and cause several unwanted side effects.
The pharmacists at SBH Medical have the
ability to compound several unique topical gels that may help
you. These gels would be easy to use, painless, and custom made
to meet your individual needs. They might contain a combination
of the following medications:
Cimetidine - approved by
the FDA for inhibition of gastric acid secretion, it has been
advocated for a number of dermatological diseases. The cutaneous
uses and immunological effects of cimetidine have been actively
studied over the past few years. Studies have shown cimetidine
to be effective in treating viral warts, mucosal warts, genital
warts and recalcitrant warts.
Deoxy-D-Glucose (DDG) -
is an antimetabolite of glucose with antiviral activity; an example
of which is found here.
Salicylic Acid - softens
the skin layers that form a wart. Mild prepartations have been
sold over the counter for years. Higher potency, prescription
strength preparations may be more effective.
5-Fluorouracil - is chemotherapeutic
and is FDA-approved for actinic keratoses and basal cell carcinomas.
However, there has been a great deal of interest in its off-label
use for the HPV virus. 5-FU has shown promise in treating warts
as monotherapy and in combination with salicylic acid.
